  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

I believe our vote is the punctuation of our voice. Without that resounding exclamation mark, I believe our voices are just incoherent noise.

  • Living in a Black No-Man's Land
by Roger Madison Jr. inOur Community on2019-10-28

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

The Massive Resistance Movement Against Obama

THIS IS A CALL TO ARMS!!!

I was there when Harry S. Byrd Jr. led the "Massive Resistance" in Virginia following the Brown v. Board of Education decision. The result was the dismantling of education in my home town in Prince Edward County Virgina -- and the beginning of decline of urban education all over America.

WE MUST LEARN FROM THIS HISTORY, AND PREVENT THE REPUBLICANS FROM DESTROYING THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY!  Read this article at TheRoot.com for more details.

What we are facing -- by any other name -- is a direct attack on President Obama.  We must not allow the Republicans to shape the debate with false choices, and the declaration that everything President Obama is against the will of the people.

He has managed in only 18 months to implement policies and ensure the passage of key legislation and initiatives on health care, employment, civil rights, economic recovery and education. He ended combat operations in Iraq (admittedly while stepping up operations in the Afghanistan quagmire). And despite all the political naysayers, Obama is likely to accomplish more reforms before 2012. Technically speaking, he has been a successful president.

Vice President Biden said last week that the alternative to Democratic control of Congress is the "Republican Tea Party."

The vice president sought to link the official GOP to the Tea Party, the coalition of conservative activists who've boosted a new crop of conservative candidates challenging Democrats this fall.

"Don't compare me to the almighty, compare me to the alternative," Biden said of the message Democrats must deliver to voters this fall.

We are all angry over the impact of the recession on our lives. African Americans have been hurt worst of all.  The policies and legislation that the Obama Administration has been able to pass in the face of Massive Resistance are steps in the right direction.

THE ALTERNATIVE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

We must get out to vote in November and support Democrats who will work with President Obama to keep this positive change going.
