  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

I believe our vote is the punctuation of our voice. Without that resounding exclamation mark, I believe our voices are just incoherent noise.

  • Living in a Black No-Man's Land
by Roger Madison Jr. inOur Community on2019-10-28

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

Don't feel guilty over your path

Call it what you want.  You've been lucky!  You've been blessed! You've been fortunate!  Whatever it is, it was meant for YOU!!!

So many times, people want to you make you feel guilty because it looks like "EVERY THING" has fallen your way, the RIGHT WAY!  I've heard that so many times that people get beat up because they are made to feel bad because it really appears as if that person had every advantage!

Well, I'm a firm believer that the reason a person has so many good things happen to them is because those things are meant FOR them!  It's nothing special.  It's not because they were singled out or chosen as the special one.

Think about it like this, everybody has a path to take.  At every junction, the path will take in one direction or another.  Every direction you take has a consequence.  Some paths will lead you in a direction that is beneficial to you and some paths will lead you in a direction that will cause you to fall on yo ass!

Do you really think that every path that Oprah or Donald Trump or Bob Johnson or Hilary Clinton took in their life lead them to the path of perfection?  Come on now, we've all walked down some paths that we shouldn't have walked.  Hell, we've even walked down paths that made us turn around and go back!

What I'm trying to say is this, I don't believe that people FALL into bad situations.  For every thug or drug dealer that comes out of the projects, I can point to a few attorneys, judges and doctors who have come out of those same projects.  For even criminal who came from a single parent household, I can point to a few NBA stars as well as Actors and Actresses who were just as fine.

We all make conscious decisions regarding the paths we choose to take.  If you made the chooses that enabled you to get where you are today, be proud of the path that you walked.  The person who's trying to
