Hayes, 'Shaft' singer and disco presage, dies

ImageMEMPHIS, Tenn. — Isaac Hayes, the baldheaded, baritone-voiced soul crooner who laid the groundwork for disco and whose "Theme From Shaft" won both Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday afternoon after he collapsed near a treadmill, authorities said. He was 65.

The Black Jobless Picture - From Bleak to Bleaker & Out of Sight

The nation’s official jobless rate leaped from 5.0 percent in April to 5.5 percent in May, far outstripping the expectation that the increase would be to 5.1 percent. It was the largest percentage increase in 22 years. The jobless rate for African American rose from 8.6 percent in April to 9.7 percent a month later.
