Harvey Gantt:

Harvey B. Gantt Was Was Elected Charlotte North Carolina's First Black Mayor, On November 8, 1983.

Born In Charleston, SC In 1943, Gantt Attended Clemson University, In 1963. He Was The First Black Admitted To The School And Received A Degree In Architecture. He Later Went To MIT, Where He Got His Master's In City Planning.

Gantt Served On The Charlotte City Council From 1974 - 1983.  He Was Elected Mayor In 1983 And Served Until 1987.

He Staged Two Unsuccessful U.S. Senatorial Campaigns Against Jesse Helms -- One In 1990 And 1996.

Today Gantt Serves On The North Carolina Democratic National Committee, While Running A Successful Architectural Firm.
