Black businesses, in general, are not doing as well as they should or could due to the reluctancy of Blacks to buy from Black businesses," Green said. "We are performing the biggest boycott on ourselves. And that was born out of the transition from segregation to integration... In the 1960s, the community disbursed.... out of that came this rumor that Black businesses charge too much. Then, the negative stereotypes crept in. "

This support issue, Green notices, is singular to African American culture. It's not shared by Latino immigrations, Asians, Jamaicans, Africans, Haitians, etc. He currently lives in Florida, which has a vibrant Haitian community.

There, he notices, immigrants not only come to this country with resources, but they fall into very tightly-knit communities. They have unofficial lending resources within those communities that serve essentially as credit unions.

It's common place, he said, in every minority community but the Black community.   In fact, there is no minority in America that supports its entrepreneurs less than the Black community. But Lee says that apparent negative can be a two-way street because it puts Black entrepreneurs in a better position to compete.

They can not expect "support." Instead, they have to earn consumer loyalty.   "What has been said in the last 40 years is to support Black business as if it is a charity... but we need to change that mindset to compete," Green said. "We, as Black entrepreneurs need to stop expecting the Black consumer to support us."   

Green said the current ethos among Black entrepreneurs is based on broadening networks. As Black wealth has decentralized and is no longer in many urban communities, it is important to think beyond geography and instead think about building a consciousness.

Shopping consciously. Thinking about when, how, where and with whom we as a community spend our money.   "The cost to start up is less, the ability to reach a larger audience is greater.

We just gotta step up and dominate like we do in other fields. As we get the gist of how this economy works, we will become what we are, a great and mighty people with unlimited capacity," Green said. "When I make the decision to vote with my dollar. I will be empowered or I will empower someone else. I will empower someone who looks like me or I will empower someone else."
