In the media we hear all the time about rags to riches stories about Internet success stories. I think this has a lot to do with people thinking if you build a website they will come.
The fact of the matter is a web page is just a file on a computer called a server. It is like a Microsoft Word Document on your computer in the sense that nobody knows it exists (other than you) unless you promote it.
(1) Before starting your website I would do search engine research to see if there are people looking for what you are offering.
(2) Determine if the online market is large enough to be lucrative
(3) Do a competitive analysis to consider how hard it will be dominate your online business sector
(4) Develop a marketing plan or business assessment based on your research
(5) Create a digital infrastructure to support your sales and marketing
(6) Build your email marketing capture and offer system
(7) Write, edit and develop your sales materials whether text, audio, or now video
You should do all these things before building your website. I believe your website should ultimately either sell something or capture an email address. I will be elaborating on all these issues the next week or so in my blog.
