  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

I believe our vote is the punctuation of our voice. Without that resounding exclamation mark, I believe our voices are just incoherent noise.

  • Living in a Black No-Man's Land
by Roger Madison Jr. inOur Community on2019-10-28

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

Dear Black People Please Stop Talking about Rachel Dolezal

Dear Black People,

I hope all is well in your world today.  As for me, I've been busy trying to SAVE people money and help people MAKE money with my new business venture 5LINX.

I'm writing to you today because I want to ask a favor.  Will you please stop talking about this white woman who perpetrated a fraud by trying to pass herself off as a black woman?    Surely, it's a sin and a shame but it is not a crime.  The only crime committed is she told a bunch of bold-faced lies.  Not only did she lie about being black, she also alleged her parents were abusive and her son is actually her adopted brother.

It's obvious to me the woman needs some help.  But I have to admit she did a daring thing by passing herself off as black.  A lot of people bought into her madness and she probably had a lot of brothas diggin' on her because of her "light like whte" skin."   She probably took some abuse too from white folks who believe as long as you have 3/5 of black blood in you, you're still black.  But what about her poor parents who were traumatized by their lily white daughter coming out and denying her heritage?  They could stand it no longer so they came forward to set the record straight.

Why are we not up in arms over the number of celebrities who go "blond" and lighten their skin to have a more European look (Can you say Beyonce and Lil' Kim?)

My fellow black friends, we really do have more issues to be concerned about other than stewinng over Rachel Dolezal.   Did you know we're just halfway through thr year and the police have already murdered 500 people---that's 39 more deaths in six months than the already outrageous total from all of 2014. These are the kind of issues we must give voice to.  We should not allow our attention to be diverted on foolishness.

Well, this is all for now.  Hang in there and keep the faith.  I look forward to hearing from you.

In peace and love,

Beverly
