  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

New Book "Assertive Black...Puzzled White" Addresses Black Vs. White Questions Facing America

Foreword by Kenneth B. Clark, Ph.d., Author of "Dark Ghetto"

Author - Dr. Donald Cheek

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- Assertive Black...Puzzled White - A Black Perspective on Assertive Behavior by Dr. Donald Cheek is an honest, informative and timely book concerning black vs. white questions currently facing America. Cheek connects the traumatic African American Slave past, to the complex issues of the present by dealing with the psycho-historical effects of Jim Crow in America along with the "cultural residue" of segregation, prejudice and discrimination. He, like the Reverend Al Sharpton, "keeps it real" by speaking untold truths that still haunt America today. This is especially seen in the current media issues that focus on race and politics.

As the media continues to address the cultural differences, Dr. Cheek offers up his years of research and experience compiled into a much needed book in Assertive Black...Puzzled White - A Black Perspective on Assertive Behavior. He examines the roots of differences between black and white styles, thoughts and attitude; and he compares the diversities seen in oral and written communication, as well as in child rearing, marriage, family, education, churches, peer groups, music, humor and various aspects of "surviving" or "making it".

Dr. Cheek gives just the right insight for the race issue of today -especially prevalent with an African American President and First Lady - as an assertive and complex black community is facing a puzzled and perplexed white population. An example of this is when General Stanley McChrystal saw President Obama as being intimidated, mislabeling his persona as a result of his Euro-Centric orientation.

The book will benefit every person that has ever pondered and wondered where we stand as one nation divided by the color of our skins. It is a must read for teachers, law enforcement, mental health workers, politicians, parents and those in the business of dealing with "demographic groups" and people of color.

"Probably no one person has done more to make behavioral counseling and therapy multiculturally relevant than Donald Cheek whose pioneering book shows how to use assertivness training in a culturally relevant way with African Americans. Indeed it could be argued that Dr. Cheek is the first cognitive-behavioral theorist." -- Dr. Allen E. Ivey, EdD, ABPP, Stanford University, Harvard University, Professor (Emeritus), University of Massachusetts, Amherst; President of Micotraining Associates, an educational Publishing firm and Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology.
