Marketing vs. Advertising. There is a big difference between these two avenues of getting consumers to purchase your product or service. I've been receiving quite a bit of calls from business owners who happen to think marketng and advertising are one in the same. No folks they are not. Marketing and advertising are two different trains rolling down two different tracks heading for two different stations.

Allow me to explain the difference:

Marketing is what you do. Such as, direct mail, networking, free giveaways, having an openhouse at your place of business, customer service, social media, etc. Marketing is affordable and can be implemented and tracked without too many complications.

Advertising is what you say about your product or service. Such as, kills 99.9 percent of germs, cleans your clothes brighter, taste great with no calories, gets rid of your headache in 10 minutes, strongest hold ever, etc. Advertising is very expensive and it's rather difficult to gage if your hard earned dollars are actually doing what you expected.

Both marketing and advertising have a purpose when promoting your product or service. Choose the one that best fits your objective. Then hire someone who clearly knows the difference between the two.
